October 25, 2015 - More than 1,700 health care professionals, representing 20 countries, descended upon Cleveland for the 13th Annual Medical Innovation Summit to discuss the future of neurosciences and the overall state of healthcare innovation. Planners provided each of the 100 presenting speakers with a memorable thank you gift designed by Cleveland artist Susie Frazier. Her Magnetic Play Puzzles, meant to soothe the mind as well as stimulate creativity, also served as sophisticated photo frames. Inspired by biomimetic patterns found in nature, Susie developed an intricate composition of 46 wooden shapes embedded with high energy magnets that assemble on a steel panel to form the human brain, complete with the Cleveland Clinic logo. Made with all natural wood and salvaged steel from Cleveland's manufacturing industry, each tabletop accessory was meant to be rearranged into patterns as unique as the person who received it. "I have never been so obsessed with an object given to me as an award or gift from speaking," said Dr. Joan Fallon, the Founder and CEO of Curemark, a biopharmaceutical company focused on the treatment of neurological diseases like Autism, ADHD, and Parkinson's. SUSIE FRAZIER TEAMS UP WITH HOUSETRENDS MAGAZINE TO PRESENT INTERIOR DESIGN TRUNK SHOW IN CLEVELAND

September 25, 2015 - Susie Frazier has participated in many design shows over the years, most of which were limited to the trade and only featured art as an afterthought to fill a blank wall. Over 18 months ago, she set out to change that when she began talks with the publisher of Housetrends Magazine and the American Society of Interior Designers. Her goal was to invent a new type of show that placed a greater emphasis on the creative aspect of interior design. "By featuring completely staged rooms in which everything was available for sale, I felt it would drive consumer behavior and educate the public about the benefits of decorating around a high quality piece of art," said Frazier. On Friday September 18th, Art Wine & Design took place inside Cleveland's 78th Street Studios, where fifteen design firms featured installations complete with furniture, flooring, lighting, and accessories. "We do shows all over the country, and we couldn't believe how many qualified leads we generated from Art, Wine & Design - more than some big trade shows we do annually," said Carol Payto, Director of Marketing for Mont Granite. SHERWIN WILLIAMS COMMISSIONS SUSIE FRAZIER TO CREATE ART FOR R&D HEADQUARTERS

August 21, 2015 - Executives at The Sherwin Williams Co contacted Susie to help them create a feature wall that would encourage interaction and conversation among employees inside the R&D offices at their Breen Technology Center in Cleveland. What she came up with was a concept inspired by the molecular structure of pigment. When scientists plot out what pigment looks like at a microscopic level, each molecule is represented by a hexagon shape and letters that represent specific elements. Using materials from Cleveland's manufacturing industry, Susie designed and installed close to 50 custom hexagon tiles made out of hot rolled steel. Then over 200 wooden hexagon shapes were laser cut, painted with select Sherwin Williams colors, engraved with letters, and embedded with high energy magnets. The end result was a playful magnet wall in which visitors could create "molecular chains" to spell out phrases. The collection also included several pre-made words as a way to reinforce company values. "I absolutely love it," said Diane Strongosky, Sr. VP of Research & Development, Global Supply Chain. "It's doing exactly what I wanted outside of my office -- inspiring our people to connect, laugh, and interact more. They're having lots of fun leaving messages for each other with the magnets." SUSIE FRAZIER CREATES TERRAZZO FLOOR FOR NEW GREATER CLEVELAND RTA RAPID STATION

August 10, 2015 - The new $15 million Little Italy-University Circle rapid transit station is scheduled to open after public art elements like Susie Frazier's terrazzo floor design are installed. "Flusso," an Italian word that means "flow," is the title of her composition, which visually will point pedestrians towards the head station and out towards the sidewalks. The concept was inspired by swarming behavior in the natural world. Whether it's the flocking of birds, schooling of fish or herding of mammals, studies across different species have shown that staying in swarms is a calming mechanism for animals. Humans also show signs of swarm behavior especially when moving through transit environments. "Such projects deserve to be celebrated not just because they might impress out-of-town visitors, but more fundamentally because they improve life for residents and have the potential to hasten a virtuous cycle of growth," said Steven Litt, architecture critic at The Plain Dealer. "The underlying message, regardless of how one interprets the new station design, is that transit can bring delight to city living," See Photos...

The collection was made using a technique called encaustic assemblage, where Susie embedded actual grass, bamboo and driftwood from nearby landscapes into archival encaustic wax to create Zen-like compositions. "After spending some time with the new pieces, I can't believe how perfect they are. Love them!!" said Bev Maloney-Fischback, who owns many works of art by national and international artists. February 10, 2015 -  When Destination Cleveland, Cuyahoga County's convention and visitor's bureau, expanded their downtown headquarters to include a new street level Visitors Center, they wanted to beautify the plywood enclosure around the entrance during construction. So, they enlisted the help of designer Susie Frazier who's known as a patternist, a public artist, a designer, and a city champion. What she came up with was an agency-style, 60-foot, vinyl banner that kept within the voice and identity of the current Destination Cleveland brand campaign but featured a clever tagline and graphic element that was symbolic of the evolution of Cleveland. "We were looking for a low-cost/high-impact solution that could both educate and inspire the public about what's coming," said Hannah Fritzman Belsito, VP of Destination Development and Community Affairs. "Words cannot express our gratitude for what Susie designed. The very large barricade impacted the pedestrian experience, but Susie's piece added new vibrancy, energy and creativity." See Photos...

SUSIE FRAZIER EXPANDS HER PRESENCE INSIDE CLEVELAND'S 78TH STREET STUDIOS

May 15, 2013 - For the past three months, Susie Frazier has designed and managed the buildout of her new retail showroom inside 78th Street Studios, Northeast Ohio's largest art and design complex. What started as a simple retail expansion to showcase more of her products evolved into a multidimensional development project that involved attracting a restaurant across the hall and renovating several common areas leading to her space. The facade on her front entrance is a bold, floor-to-ceiling cladding of reclaimed wood, which is the same material used in the manufacturing of many of her products. Inside is a sliding barn door to another room that she designed out of the same salvaged material. Other reclaimed elements include a live edge wood counter made from a fallen maple tree and a magnetic wall made out of scrap steel from Cleveland's manufacturing sector. Across the hall, Susie secured a restaurant partner in Spice Kitchen & Bar, who during the THIRD FRIDAY art walks uses cafe tables she designed out of old industrial cable spools. "I couldn't be happier with Susie's vision for her space as a destination within our property," said Dan Bush, owner of 78th Street Studios. "Her high-quality aesthetic, attention to detail, and commitment to creating an authentic and memorable visitor experience has been transformative for our building. SUSIE FRAZIER CREATES ART FOR PROFESSIONAL BASEBALL PLAYER, TRAVIS HAFNER

February 12, 2012 - Every now and then, interior designers take on a project that begs for something different. In the home of Cleveland Indians Designated Hitter,Travis Hafner, Natalie Matteucci of Matteucci Interiors knew exactly what to propose: fragments of driftwood meandering across the wall like branches of a tree. She approached Susie, who suggested a design that involved the careful joining of over 30 different logs found on the shores of Lake Erie. To give the installation the illusion that it was floating off the wall, Susie used 2" stainless steel standoffs to mount the sculpture. Not only did this hardware provide the reliable engineering needed for attachment and a nice complement to the metal sconces on either side, but they also allowed for interesting shadows to cast on the walls behind the wood, no matter what time of day. "The Hafner home was a huge project, and it was such a relief to work with Susie because I knew she understood what I was envisioning and could execute it with high-standards," said Natalie. "The end result was more beautiful than we anticipated. Amy and Travis just love it!"

CLEVELAND VA MEDICAL CENTER COMMISSIONS 25 ARTWORKS FROM SUSIE FRAZIER FOR NEW BUILDING

January 20, 2010 - When people connect with nature, healing begins. That's been Susie Frazier's guiding principles as an artist and designer for the past thirteen years. Now scientific research on this topic is inspiring hospitals across the country to consider the same. The design team working on the new Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center expansion, a $500 million project in University Circle, wasted no time acting on this news, commissioning Susie Frazier to design 25 pieces of organic eco-art that bring a little bit of the outside to the inside. The collection included two dozen 12" x 12" pieces for the Radiology Department's treatment corridors as well as one 48" x 18" piece for the Radiology waiting room (shown here). Each original piece of art was made using real botanicals from forests, beaches and desert environments that were layered with encaustic wax into mesmerizing compositions. "I believe in the effectiveness of nature's patterns as a calming mechanism for the mind, particularly as I've healed from my own life traumas," said Susie. "It was a privilege to create a collection that was intended for this purpose, so that others going through difficult health challenges could have the opportunity to feel similar benefits."

CONSTRUCTION BEGINS ON SUSIE FRAZIER'S PUBLIC ART DESIGNS FOR CLEVELAND'S GORDON SQUARE ARTS DISTRICT

August 20, 2009 - Fifteen city blocks in the Gordon Square Arts District between W. 58th and W. 73rd streets are about to experience a $3.5 million facelift that includes a repaved street, wider sidewalks, buried utility wires, new light fixtures, enhanced landscaping and approximately $250,000 worth of infrastructural public art designed by Cleveland artist, Susie Frazier. In addition to 27 curved, backless concrete benches that light up underneath, and hundreds of pre-cast pavers that were sandblasted with rhythmic patterns from the Lake Erie shoreline, Susie designed the one of the most complicated crosswalk patterns in the United States. That's because her tree grain design, inspired by the Forest City in which she lives, could only be constructed using state of the art technology and precise attention to detail both in the fabrication and the installation of the job. Susie's design required the laser cutting of 30,000 custom colored concrete pavers that had to be assembled like sections of a puzzle before being shipped to the job site to be carefully placed in field of interlocking pavers. Planners liked the design so much, they agreed to Susie's suggestion of using the inner "knot" to become the logo for the entire district. Read More...

SUSIE FRAZIER'S SPARX IN THE CITY PROGRAM GENERATES $3.6 MILLION IN ECONOMIC IMPACT, GETS ACQUIRED BY DCA

February 8, 2007 - Sparx in the City, a downtown initiative launched in 2002 by artist Susie Frazier, was created to promote the street-level art and music experience of Cleveland. It started as a volunteer-based experiment, and in four years became a national model, earning a City Livability Award by the U.S. Conference of Mayors. By 2006, Susie had raised enough resources to produce 28 free summer concerts throughout the sidewalks of downtown and execute the largest art walk in Ohio connecting 80 different fine arts retailers, studio artists, and outdoor festivals. Last year's corporate, media and community partnerships alone were valued at over half a million dollars. According to a 2006 study by Team NEO and Cypress Research, the art walk portion generated an overall economic impact of $3.6 million for Cuyahoga County. The Downtown Cleveland Alliance, one of the program's lead sponsors, announced today that in recognition of the program becoming a key initiative fitting in perfectly with its mission to create a more vibrant and dynamic downtown, the DCA will assume management responsibilities for Sparx going forward. After Susie transitions the program to new management, she plans to redirect her attention on her growing art business. Read More...
